When your knee starts talking to you, it’s easy to assume the knee is the problem.
Sometimes it is.
But sometimes your knee is simply the place that’s picking up the extra work.
Think about a side-step.
Your foot lands. Your weight shifts. Your hip helps support you.
At least, that’s the goal. If your foot steps out but your body doesn’t really move with it, your knee can end up stuck in the middle trying to manage the load.
The pool is a great place to feel the difference.
Try This Knee Supported Side Step
· Take a comfortable step to the side.
· Pause. Did you actually move your weight onto that foot?
· Try again. This time, step and let your pelvis travel over the stepping foot.
You may immediately notice more work in your hip and a stronger connection through your whole foot.
Your knee shouldn’t have to do everything by itself.
Your feet and hips are part of the team.
Water shoes can help too, especially if better traction helps you feel more confident pressing into the pool floor and shifting your weight.
The next time your knee feels cranky, don’t only ask, “What exercise should I do for my knee?”
Try asking:
How could I get the rest of my body to do better?
That question can change a lot.
